Sheedy Receives "GridIrons Gives Back" Scholarship Award
Barrington safety Sam Sheedy was one of two recipients to be awarded the "GridIrons Gives Back" scholarship for excellence in the classroom as well as on the gridiron.
Sponsored by Dawson Builders and in conjunction with GridIrons, Sheedy received a $500 check towards tuition at Ohio State University, where he will be attending in the fall.
"(Sam was) top notch and more than deserving of the award for everything he has done," said Broncos head coach Joe Sanchez. "From a player's perspective, you couldn't ask for a better representative. He was extremely coachable, talented and always did the things we asked of him."
Sheedy, a two-year starter at safety for Barrington, had three interceptions over that span, as the Broncos compiled an impressive 17-5 record, reaching the second round of the 8A playoffs both times.
Nominated for the scholarship by his coach, Sheedy currently has a weighted GPA of 4.1. He plans to major in psychology with possibly a minor in sports management, perhaps channeling that into a career as a sports psychologist.
"As a student I had the chance to have him in class as a sophomore and he was outstanding," said Sanchez. "As you see on the football field, he pays attention to detail…and comes from a fantastic family, setting the bar high for his younger brother."
An extremely humble Sheedy showed plenty of praise for others when accepting the award.
"This means a lot and it feels good to be representing the Barrington football program," said Sheedy. "I think anyone on the team is deserving of this award, but for coach to nominate me specifically, it feels great to be seen as a leader…something I did all season and the hard work has paid off. This is something I feel the team helped me achieve."
