Fremd Shakes Off Rust, Leaves Mundelein In The Dust
Emily Klaczek scored 12 points and Ruthie Montella contributed 10 as the top-seeded Fremd girls basketball team made quick work of 20th-seed Mundelein, 60-35 Tuesday night in its opening game of the class 4A regional playoffs in Mundelein.
After a minor scare in the first quarter where the Lady Vikings trailed the Mustangs 13-11 after one period, Fremd shot 9-of-11 from the field in the second quarter and opened the stanza on a 12-0 run that Mundelein could not recover from.
By halftime, Fremd held a 36-19 advantage while shooting a blistering 67 (14-for-21) percent. The team also had 10 steals in the half and 17 for the game.
Any chance of a Mustangs (10-21) second-half comeback was quickly snuffed out when the Vikings (27-4) rattled off eight quick points to open the frame to lead 44-19.
Kendall Klatt led the Mustangs with 12 points on the evening.
